Kate Beckinsale: biography and career
Kate Beckinsale
Kathryn Bailey "Kate" Beckinsale was born on 26 July 1973 in England, and has resided in London for most of her life. Her mother is Judy Loe, an actress/BBC executive who has appeared in a number of British dramas and sitcoms. Her father was Richard Beckinsale, a well known comedic actor he starred in series like "Rising Damp" (1974), "Porridge" (1974) and "The Lovers" (1970). He passed away tragically early in 1979 at the age of 31 when Kate was 5. She had a nervous breakdown and developed anorexia at the age of fifteen and underwent Freudian psychoanalysis for four years.
Her major acting debut came in a TV film about World War II called "Hallmark Hall of Fame: One Against the Wind" (1991), filmed in Luxembourg during the summer of 1991. Kate received her big break in Kenneth Branagh's film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing (1993). She performed as the lead in the contemporary mystery drama “Uncovered” (1994); she followed with a co-starring role in the mystery “Haunted” in 1995. Leading roles in the BBC remake of “Emma” (1996), the UK comedy “Shooting Fish” (1997) and the US dramas “Last Days of Disco” (1998), and “Brokedown Palace” (1999) followed. Kate’s box office woes were about to end as she was cast in the 2001 film “Pearl Harbor”, which was one of the highest grossing films of its year.

Kate Beckinsale
Kate took a chance, and made a major change in both her career and personal life by accepting the role of Selene in the action movie “Underworld”, directed by Len Wiseman. In 2004, Beckinsale starred in action horror film Van Helsing. In 2006, Beckinsale reprised her role as Selene in the successful vampire sequel Underworld: Evolution. in 2009, Beckinsale starred in family drama Everybody's Fine alongside Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore and Rockwell, her Snow Angels co-star. Beckinsale reprised her role as Selene in the fourth installment of the vampire franchise Underworld: Awakening (2012).
Kate had an eight-year relationship with actor Michael Sheen from 1995 until 2003. Their daughter, Lily Mo Sheen, was born in London, England on 31 January 1999. While filming “Underworld” Kate and Wiseman fell in love, though the two remained only friends while completing the movie. In June 2003, a few months after she had separated from Sheen, Kate became engaged to Len Wiseman, and the two were wed on 9 May 2004 in Bel-Air, California.

Kate Beckinsale Biography

It was only with her role alongside Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett in the $130 million blockbuster Pearl Harbour that Kate Beckinsale
finally came to be regarded as a major screen actress and personality in her own right - as opposed to the damaged daughter of a famous father. Being smart, well-read and occasionally outspoken - much like her screen heroines Geena Davis and Katherine Hepburn - she had producer Jerry Bruckheimer say of her: “She has such subtlety and style. She can switch to humour from high drama in a split second. She reminds me of Meg Ryan some years back”, while legendary director John Schlesinger added that she has the “same combination of freshness and intelligence” as the young Julie Christie. High praise, hard earned.
As said, Kate took some time to emerge from the shadow of her father, the much-beloved comic actor Richard Beckinsale, star of Rising Damp, The Lovers and Porridge. Born on July 26th, 1973, she was only five when he suddenly and unexpectedly passed away, leaving her to be raised by her mother, the actress Judy Loe (Kate has a half-sister, Samantha Beckinsale, herself an actress and star of London’s Burning - they met when very young, but not again till 1995). Yet, so popular was her dad, and so shocked was the nation by his untimely death, that she would for years be talked about as his tragic daughter, rather than her own person.

Kate Beckinsale
Her bereavement affected her deeply. She describes herself then as “a furious and passionate child” who went off the rails at school. She was further disturbed at the age of nine when Loe began a relationship with director Roy Battersby and moved in with him - Kate now having to share her space with Battersby’s daughter and four loud sons. She remembers feeling “invaded”, and hoping that her mother would not remarry, though she now gladly acknowledges Battersby’s positive influence on her life.
Attending public school at Flexlands, Godolphin and Latymer, she was a bright student, tomboyish and encouraged to be foul-mouthed by Battersby, a working-class Londoner who found it hilarious to hear a posh girl swear. But her fury at her father’s death gradually turned inwards, making her troubled and withdrawn, with a paranoid fear of illness, till she reached breakdown in the form of anorexia - anorexia, as she says, being “the mode of nervous breakdown most available to teenage girls”. By the age of 15, she weighed just five stone yet, with the support of Loe and Battersby, and the aid of five years of Freudian analysis, eventually recovered. Now she claims that anorexia and the learning process it forced upon her were “the best thing that ever happened to me”.

About Kate Beckinsale

Kate was born on 26 July 1973 in England, and has resided in London for most of her life. Her mother is Judy Loe, who has appeared in a number of British dramas and sitcoms and continues to work as an actress, predominantly in British television productions. Her father was Richard Beckinsale, born in Nottingham, England. He starred in a number of popular British television comedies during the 1970s, most notably the series “Rising Damp” (1974), “Porridge” (1974) and “The Lovers” (1970). He passed away tragically early in 1979 at the age of 31.
Beckinsale attended the private school Godolphin and Latymer School in London for her grade and primary school education. In her teens she twice won the British bookseller W.H. Smith Young Writers’ competition – once for three short stories and once for three poems. After a tumultuous adolescence (a bout of anorexia – cured – and a smoking habit which continues to this day), she gradually took up the profession of acting.
Kate  major acting debut came in a TV film about World War II called One Against the Wind (1991) (TV), filmed in Luxembourg during the summer of 1991. It first aired on American television that December. Kate began attending Oxford University’s New College in the fall of 1991, majoring in French and Russian literature. She had already decided that she wanted to act, but to broaden her horizons she chose university over drama school. While in her first year at Oxford, Kate received her big break in Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing (1993). Kate worked in three other films while attending Oxford, beginning with a part in the medieval historical drama Royal Deceit (1994), cast as Ethel. The film was shot during the spring of 1993 on location in Denmark, and she filmed her supporting part during New College’s Easter break. Later in the summer of that year she played the lead in the contemporary mystery drama Uncovered (1995). Before she went back to school, her third year at university was spent at Oxford’s study-abroad program in Paris, France, immersing herself in the French language, Parisian culture and French cigarettes.
A year away from the academic community and living on her own in the French capital caused her to re-evaluate the direction of her life. She faced a choice: continue with school or concentrate on her flourishing acting career. After much thought, she chose the acting career. In the spring of 1994 Kate left Oxford, after finishing three years of study. Kate appeared in the BBC/Thames Television satire Cold Comfort Farm (1995) (TV), filmed in London and East Sussex during late summer 1994 and which opened to spectacular reviews in the United States, grossing over $5 million during its American run. It was re-released to U.K. theaters in the spring of 1997.
Acting on the stage consumed the first part of 1995; she toured in England with the Thelma Holts Theatre Company production of Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull”. After turning down several mediocre scripts “and going nearly berserk with boredom”, she waited seven months before another interesting role was offered to her. Her big movie of 1995 was the romance/horror movie Haunted (1995), starring opposite Aidan Quinn and John Gielgud, and filmed in West Sussex. In this film she wanted to play “an object of desire”, unlike her past performances where her characters were much less the siren and more the worldly innocent. Kate’s first film project of 1996 was the British ITV production of Jane Austen’s novel Emma (1996) (TV). Her last film of 1996 was the comedy Shooting Fish (1997), filmed at Shepperton Studios in London during early fall. She played the part of Georgie, an altruistic con artist. She had a daughter, Lily, in 1999 with actor Michael Sheen.

Born in London, England on July 26th, 1973, Kate went to Oxford University and was featured in minor British television roles before becoming an international acting sensation, starting her career in 1991 while she was still enrolled in college. Kate has no siblings and is currently married to Len Wiseman since 2004 who is a film director. The couple currently resides in Brentwood, California (a suburb of Los Angeles).

Kate has appeared in a number of block buster Hollywood films including Pearl Harbor, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Underworlds, The Aviator, Van Helsing, Underworld: Evolution, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Underworld: Awakening.
Kate’s father passed away at the young age of 31 due to a heart attack which left her devastated as a child. In her early years Beckinsale was an aspiring writer and even won awards for writing a short story and a piece of poetry while she was still a teenager. Socially Beckinsale had a hard time in high school and considers herself to be a “late bloomer” due to her inexperience with relationships throughout high school. She also had some bouts with depression and anorexia at a young age which she was able to overcome eventually.
Shortly after her father’s death Kate decided to follow in her family’s occupation of acting and decided that she wanted to be an actress alongside both of her parents. Kate Beckinsale is an actress who despite her fame and stardom has overcome a great deal to arrive at her current circumstances. She is the picturesque “girl next door” and is often characterized as a person who is down to Earth and easy to get along with. Kate has a daughter from her previous relationship with Michael Sheen however she currently has no plans to have any more children (although publicly not opposed to the concept either).
With a vast array of block buster hits and an international fan following, Beckinsale is one of the top actresses of her era and is already scheduled to release three additional movies in 2012 and 2013.
